I had the bright idea of planting side walk chalk around the neighbourhood so I could go back and document how people interact with it. I was really excited about the idea of finding anonymous drawings or words from the people who pass by the same places I do. I figured any one could use it guilt free since there would be no damage done.
I was surprised to see that many sticks of chalk later there were still no drawings or markings, but all the chalk was gone. It seems that people like to take the chalk and save it for later (I suppose). Or perhaps that even though the chalk wouldn’t harm anything they still felt that they couldn’t freely make their mark in public. This in itself is kind of interesting.
I am going to keep trying and I’ll post any results I get. I just have to wait for the next dry sunny day, we get a lot of rain here on the east coast, so I need to be extra careful that the chalk and the drawings don’t wash away.
